Challenges to state weapon ban continue
An Illinois lawmaker is challenging Illinois’ highest court and its ruling on a weapons ban. State Rep. Dan Caulkins has filed a post-judgment petition with the Illinois Supreme Court to vacate its decision on the weapons ban law. He says at issue is the denial of due process under the 14th Amendment arising from two justices participating in the case despite overwhelming reasons they should have recused themselves. He said both justices received millions in contributions from interested parties, creating a conflict of interest.
Chicago Mayor proposes plan to ban new natural gas hookups
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is backing a plan that would end natural gas hookups in new homes and buildings, but the idea is drawing resistance from some unions. Johnson plans to introduce a clean buildings ordinance Wednesday that would end new gas hookups for cooking, heating and hot water tanks and instead would require electric power. Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers opposes the proposal, saying a ban “restricts options.”
Ameren Illinois honored for storm response
Ameren Illinois is being honored for its response to last summer’s derecho. The company was presented with an Emergency Response Award by the National Energy Association for restoring power to nearly 200,000 customers. The National Weather Service reported the June 29 storm left a 500-plus-mile path of damage through several Midwest states. The hardest hit areas in Illinois included Macon, Champaign and Vermilion counties.
