Bengaluru: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently addressed a gathering at the Bengaluru branch office of the South India Regional Council of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. During her interaction with the accountants, she highlighted significant achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, noting that 25 crore people have risen above the poverty line in India.

Minister Sitharaman emphasized that poverty cannot be solely measured by financial status but encompasses various factors such as employment, healthcare, transportation, access to essential amenities like clean water and housing, and education. She pointed out that more than 25 crore people in India have transcended the poverty line when considering these holistic indicators.

Furthermore, Minister Sitharaman highlighted the substantial savings exceeding two lakh crore rupees in zero balance Jandhan accounts, providing a clearer insight into the economic status of the impoverished. She also lauded initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Swanidhi Yojana, which empowers small traders to access direct loans from banks, enabling them to conduct businesses without intermediaries, thus benefiting millions across the nation.

The Finance Minister expressed appreciation for the crucial role played by auditors in India’s economic progress, emphasizing the importance of their service.

In addition, Chairman of the Bangalore Branch of the South India Regional Council, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Pramod Ar Hegade, highlighted Bangalore’s significant contribution to the accounting profession in India, noting the unwavering support provided by accountants for the nation’s economic advancement.

The event was attended by Secretary Kavita Paramesh, Central Council Member Kotha Srinivas, and South Indian Regional Council Member Geeta AB, among others.

Overall, the dialogue emphasized collaborative efforts between the government and accounting professionals towards achieving economic prosperity and social development in India.
