Illinois quick hits: Miller votes against ousting McCarthy; UAW strike-related layoffs

Miller votes against ousting McCarthy

U.S. Rep. Mary Miller voted against ousting former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

In a rare motion to remove McCarthy brought by Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, eight Republicans joined with Democrats to vacate the office. Miller said she voted against McCarthy 15 times in January but refused to join Democrats Tuesday, saying it would end the Biden impeachment inquiry.

UAW strike-related layoffs

A ripple effect caused by the UAW strike is starting to impact other areas of the auto industry. Ford is laying off 330 workers at an Illinois plant as a result of the ongoing UAW strike.

In a statement, Ford said the layoffs will take place at a stamping plant in Chicago Heights. Company officials said the strike is impacting the facility since the plant makes and delivers parts to the workers who are now not working.

Ford said nearly 1,000 employees have been impacted by what they call strike-related layoffs.
