Four people were killed early Sunday in Shelby County after a train hit their vehicle.

Illinois State Police report the collision occurred around 4:30 a.m. at a rural railroad crossing north of Effingham. All the victims were male and from Neoga and Effingham.

Officials said the warning lights and bells had been activated, signaling an incoming train. The train did not derail as a result of the crash.

Water project begins for suburbs

Construction has begun on a project that will eventually provide water from Lake Michigan to be transported to several Chicago suburbs.

The project is a partnership between the city and the Grand Prairie Water Commission, which is made up of the communities of Joliet, Crest Hill, Minooka, Shorewood, Channahon and Romeoville.

Officials said the current water supply from underground aquifers will be insufficient within five years. The project is expected to be completed by 2029.

Mall demotions

It is officially the end for a mall in northern Illinois. Demolition on the Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee is underway.

The 45-year-old mall closed its doors for good last year. The village of West Dundee bought the property for $7 million and there are plans for a mixed-use development of retail entertainment and residential units.
