Illinois quick hits: Earned income tax credit available; emergency message in error

Earned income tax credit available

The Illinois Department of Revenue is encouraging Illinoisans to take advantage of savings offered by the newly expanded Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit, a benefit that helps low to moderate income workers get a tax break.

For tax year 2023, coverage has been expanded to include taxpayers with an IRS-issued Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, as well as workers ages 18 to 24 and over 65. Taxpayers eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit automatically qualify for the Illinois credit.

Emergency message in error

Officials at Lake Land Community College in Mattoon were a bit on edge Tuesday after several emergency messages were sent to the school in error.

The college’s administration said their usual Emergency Alert System test messages were sent accurately, but several other messages were sent as well, including that there was a lockdown on campus and a tornado was approaching.

The administration followed those messages up to inform the community of their erroneous nature.

Another act announced for State Fair

The Illinois State Fair has added a second concert. Award-winning country music artist Jordan Davis will headline the Illinois State Fair Grandstand Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Davis recently earned his sixth career No. 1 hit with the song “Next Thing You Know.” His songs have been streamed 4 billion times worldwide. He joins Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit on the 2024 fair concert schedule.
