Illinois quick hits: Deputy identified after fatal crash; detention ‘riot’ investigated

Deputy identified after fatal crash

Funeral arrangements are pending for a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy who died following a crash Thursday.

Illinois State Police said Christina Musil was parked on the shoulder of Route 23 when a large truck went off the roadway and rear-ended her squad car. Musil was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Sheriff Andy Sullivan said Musil was a five-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and also served in the Army National Guard for four years. The truck driver, who was taken into custody, faces possible charges.

Detention ‘riot’ investigated

An investigation is underway at a Galesburg detention center after eight staff members and two juveniles were injured in what authorities are calling a “riot.”

Deputies arrived at the Mary Davis Detention Home Wednesday and said at least 10 juveniles were assaulting staff members. Knox County Sheriff Brad Davis said all the youth were secured in their cells while deputies assessed the damage to the facility.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is marking a month-long observance to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness messages and promote prevention efforts during Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

Officials said this year’s theme, Building Together, Prevention is Partnership, is a call to action to recognize that everyone in the community has a role to play in ensuring children grow up safe and loved; and families have the resources they need to thrive.
