Illinois news in brief: Activists call for ceasefire; Car owners sue Volkswagen after carjacking; African cat caught in Macon County

Jewish peace activists, Palestinian supporters call for ceasefire

Hundreds of Jewish peace activists and Palestinian supporters gathered in downtown Chicago Monday to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. People traveled to Illinois from other Midwest states for the demonstration, blocking the entrance to the Israeli consulate. Over 100 protestors who had blocked escalators leading to the consulate were arrested for misdemeanor trespassing.

Car owners sue Volkswagen after carjacking

The owners of a Volkswagen whose vehicle was carjacked with their toddler inside are suing the car company. Taylor Shepherd was outside her Libertyville home getting her son out of her vehicle when two men pulled up, knocked her to the ground, and stole her car with the 2-year-old still inside. But Volkswagen allegedly refused to give law enforcement the GPS tracking location data from the car because the tracking free trial had expired. The toddler was later found unharmed in a Waukegan parking lot.

African cat caught in Macon County

After spending weeks on the loose in central Illinois, an African serval cat has been caught. The Macon County Animal Control and Care Center shared on its Facebook page that the cat was captured between Maroa and Forsyth over the weekend. The serval was captured on private property and was transported to a foster facility. The cat will remain there until legal issues are resolved with the owner.
