For example, Ludo was known as Parchis in Spain and Chatush Pada (or the four cloth) in China. The Americans used to call it Parcheesi. It was a quite popular game among the Royal Navy and they gave the name Uckers. In Africa, however, it came to be known as Ludu.

Nowadays, the name Ludo is attributed to the popular game. While it might look like an ordinary game to you that is played with the role of a dice, Ludo has more to offer. It is a very strategic game and needs proper planning and methods while playing. Ludo has also proven to increase the cognitive skills of a human being. The popularity of ludo has surged so much, especially during the pandemic, that it has beaten immensely popular games like Candy Crush Saga and PUBG in terms of downloads and new registrations.

History of Ludo

The exact origin of the game is uncertain. However, the earliest proofs that can be found are in the historic caves of Ellora in Maharashtra. A board game, very similar to Ludo, has been depicted on the walls of those caves. These illustrations seem to suggest that Ludo is supposedly an Indian creation.

While the exact pattern might not be followed by people earlier, the concept of Ludo has been alive for a long time. There are several ways to play the game previously, such as with cloth, slate, boards using seeds, shells, staves or dice. Over the years, the game has been modified into different versions. Now, Ludo can be played online with people all over the world at any place and time.

The Rules of the Game

The rules of Ludo can be divided into five main rules. The game is very easy to play but requires a lot of cognitive participation to win. It is played on a board by 2 to 4 players. It also needs 16 coins of 4 different colors – red, blue, green, and yellow. A dice is needed to advance the coins. The game aims to direct the coins to their respective pockets, regarded as their home.

While it is fairly easy to play, the game still involves strict moves and timely decisions in order to win the round. Here are some of the rules to abide by:

-Arrange the coins on the Ludo board. The pocket colors should match the coins. The game can be played with 2 to 4 players. In the case of 2 players, they should sit diagonally opposite each other. If you are playing with 3 other players, one pocket remains vacant. In the case of 4 players, all the pockets are taken.

-The coins can only be released from a pocket when the player gets a 6 or 1. In case, they do not, they have to pass the dice to the next player. If you get 3 consecutive 6’s, then your turn is null and void and the chance passes to the next player.

-If your coin reaches the square where your opponent’s coins are, then you get to “kill’ it. However, you cannot capture your opponent’s coin when it is in one of the safe zones. Each pocket has two safe zone – the one with a star and the other with an arrow. You also cannot cancel a pile of coins of the same color if they are on the same square. If your opponent’s coin has entered home runs, the final rectangular-shaped location, you would not be able to “kill” it.

-A partner cannot capture their teammate’s coins. However, they can accelerate the move movement of the teammate’s coins after they have all their coins in the home run. For that, they need to get a 6 again. If you are planning to protect your partner’s coins, you can also do so by forming a block or a pile.
-Some fouls can compromise your turn in this strategic game – for instance, if you roll the dice out of the board, if you get 3 consecutive 6’s and if you fake a digit.
