Award-winning team of Aussie doctors and engineers from PEMDx introduces next-gen baby breathing monitor

Cuba Wand is a state-of-the-art portable hand-held wand that accurately detects baby’s breaths and aids parents in getting an instant and accurate assessment of breathing rate.

December 10, 2021: After development of the award-winning ApnoLight, PEMDx Pty Ltd. is pleased to announce the launch of its state-of-the-art baby breathing rate monitor. Titled “Cuba Wand”, it’s the FIRST-ever device of its kind to measure a baby’s breathing rate directly from baby’s airflow. The product is intelligently designed to aid parents when checking a baby’s breathing rate, assuring instant and accurate results.

PEMDx Pty Ltd. is an initiative by Dr Phillip Melksham (Anesthetist and Biomedical Engineer), Dr Mariam Rowe (Medical Doctor), and Dylan Rowe (Electrical Engineer). The company is driven by the mission to develop innovative respiratory monitoring devices and its first product, ApnoLight, has won the esteemed Australian Good Design Award. Cuba Wand is based on the R&D of the award-winning device.

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Mariam Rowe, co-inventor of Cuba Wand, shared that Cuba Wand has been developed in collaboration with parents of newborns and guidance from practicing doctors. The device consists of a simple hand-held wand that accurately detects baby’s breaths and provides parents with a visual que and gentle vibration with each breath. According to feedback from early users, they found it more convenient to accurately measure the baby’s breathing rate with Cuba Wand than trying to feel for belly movements or tiny nasal airflows.

“Respiratory (breathing) rate is closely monitored in hospital settings as it is an early indicator of patient deterioration” stated Dr. Mariam Rowe.

“We have used thermometers to check sick children at home for generations, but it can be difficult for parents to get an accurate measurement of ‘breathing rate’. There is no shortage of breathing monitors for babies today, but they are mostly focused on SIDS prevention and need to be physically attached to the baby- which can be difficult at times, say when the baby is sleeping or rugged up in clothing. This is where our device would be highly beneficial.”

One of the major advantages of the Cuba Wand is that it directly measures breaths using nasal airflow- a characteristic that makes it more user-friendly than regular baby breathing monitoring devices. This is unlike any other device in this category which primarily use belly movement to detect baby breaths. One can simply hold the device under the baby’s nose to get an instant assessment. This way, the Cuba Wand can be used to get accurate readings even when the baby is all layered up in clothing.

Unlike similar counterparts, Cuba Wand does not need to operate with any smartphone or app. Parents can simply turn it on and check on their baby within seconds.

“Cuba Wand is uniquely designed to help parents get a more holistic picture of their child\’s health if they are concerned. The product is simple to operate and can be used anywhere, at home, car, pram, and so on” stated Dr. Mariam Rowe.
