An Insight Into The Scope Of Architecture After High School

India is home to some 400 plus Architecture universities and institutes. Annually, these colleges produce some of the best Architects in the country. As of 2019, there were approximately 90,976 Architects in India. This number has been only increasing steadily over the years. There is much work available in the field despite the competition to get into a good Architecture university.

The above-mentioned 400 Architectural institutes offer several disciplines and concentrations at different educational levels. CODE, Center for design excellence (School of architecture & design) VGU at Jaipur falls in the same category. It is one of the best Architectural colleges in Rajasthan.

For students who are interested in Architecture but do not know where to start, which courses to apply to, and job profiles, a description of the same has been made below.

Types Of Architecture Courses After School

Certificate: Certificate courses in Architecture are of the shortest duration. They last from a few weeks to six months. One can also complete certificate courses in Architecture online as well as in offline mode. There is a wide range of topics that can be covered and admissions to certificate courses are primarily on the merit basis of the previous examination score. Some popular online platforms that have certificate courses are Udemy, Coursera, edX, etc.

Diploma: Diploma courses are usually one to two years in duration. While certificate courses accept students from class 10th too, diploma courses accept class 12th students only. Admissions to diploma courses are on both merit basis and through entrance tests. Diploma courses usually have both core Architecture subjects and specialization subjects as well.

Bachelor of Architecture: A Bachelor of Architecture or B.Arch is a three to four-year-long course at the undergraduate level. Students who have completed their class 12th with at least a 50% aggregate score are eligible to pursue this course. Additionally, to get admission, a national-level entrance test score is also needed. Upon finishing a B.Arch course, one can work at an entry-level job in the Architecture field. There are many architecture courses in Jaipur that offer B.Arch degrees.

  • Job Profiles

    • Architect: Right after completing a B.Arch degree, individuals can start working at entry-level positions as Architect. Their job is to assist with the design of buildings and structures, prepare the renderings and plans along with other relevant documents for the project. They use knowledge of building codes, materials, and principles of construction in their work. Generally, they would be assisting a Senior Architect in their work. Indian Architects bring in salaries ranging from 3 – 5 LPA initially.
    • Landscape Architect: While Architects design and construct buildings, a Landscape Architect works on the exterior. Gardens and recreational areas of private homes and commercial spaces are designed by the Landscape Architect. They also create gardens, play areas, university campuses, etc. They need to have an in-depth knowledge of trees, shrubs, and flowers to do their job. Landscaping of major amusement parks is also handled by a Landscape Architect. All major architect colleges in Jaipur offer Landscape Architecture as a specialization. Landscape Architects bring in around the same average salaries as Architects, ranging from 3 – 5 LPA.
    • Urban Planner: Urban Planners are professionals who help design and help construct public infrastructure. Here public infrastructure includes communities and facilities like offices and high-rise apartments and more. In simple terms, the Urban Planner will help in planning a city in a uniform manner. This is a huge task and requires several Urban Planners to work together in a group. These jobs are generally public sector jobs and the individual is hired by the urban planning department of Government. The average salary for Urban Planners will depend on the fact if it is a public or private job. Government jobs pay between INR 5,40,000 to INR 6,90,000 LPA.
    • Architectural Draftsman: Architectural Draftsman is a professional who creates detailed architectural renderings or plans. Any individual with a certificate or diploma in Architecture can work in this profile. The plans can be for commercial spaces or private spaces. Work is done as per instructions and guidelines given by the Architect. A portion of their work requires visiting the site of construction for measurements and such. Draftsmen on average have salaries around INR 4 – 5.5 LPA.
    • Architectural Journalist: Every industry and field of work needs writing services. For blogs, advertising, marketing, and more. Similarly, for Architecture, there is Architectural Journalism. This is a niche writing topic where a writer writes on projects, criticism of previously done work, advancements in the field, and more. This work is published in Architectural magazines and journals. While freelance journalists can usually set their own rates, on average they earn INR 3.8 – 5 LPA.
  • Higher Education

    • Master of Architecture: The first choice for a higher education degree is a Master of Architecture. The applicant should have a B.Arch degree along with a national-level entrance test score to be eligible. This is a two-year-long program and has specializations to choose from in the second year of academics.
    • Master of Urban Design: For individuals who wish to work in improving public spaces can enroll in a Master of Urban Design degree. This degree would be a continuation of higher studies learned at the bachelor’s level. MUD is also a two-year-long program that requires applicants to have an entrance test score and a B.Arch degree with at least a 55% aggregate score.
    • Master of Planning: A Master of Planning is a postgraduate degree for candidates interested in Urban and/or Regional Planning. Here Urban Planning refers to designing and creating cities, office space, public recreational areas, transportation housing of cities, and more. The applicant must have a B.Arch or a B.Plan degree to be eligible.
    • Master of Philosophy: At the doctorate level, there are two-degree options for eligible applicants, M.Phil and Ph.D. An M.Phil degree in Architecture concentrates is a research program. Students would usually work as a part of a research group or individually. There is not much classroom teaching involved in an M.Phil degree. Several top Arch colleges in Jaipur also have M.Phil degrees too.
