Louisiana ranks 14th highest in WalletHub study of 2020 state tax burdens

ouisiana came in 14th highest in a new study by the WalletHub website that examines the level of tax burdens imposed by the 50 states, based on three key tax measurements.

Residents of Louisiana paid 9.15 percent of their total personal income toward property taxes, individual state income taxes, and sales and excise taxes, according to the WalletHub analysis. The overall percentages vary significantly among the states, the study said, from over 12 percent to just over 5 percent.

In Louisiana, residents paid 2.06 percent of their total incomes toward property taxes, according to the analysis. For individual state income taxes, the percentage for the state’s residents was 1.44, while they shelled out 5.65 percent of their incomes toward sales and excise taxes, the researchers found.

WalletHub examined the state tax burdens in a year when federal taxes didn’t have to be filed until July 15 due to economic uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
