Caddo Parish detention numbers slightly rising as summer approaches

(The Center Square) — Reported juvenile detention numbers for Caddo Parish are steadily rising as school ends and summer begins.

Caddo Parish Administrator Erica Bryant gave her administrative report during Monday’s Caddo Commission work session, which included updated juvenile detention numbers.

As of May 19, there are 21 juveniles in detention, none of whom are 17-year-olds, 461 probation cases and 29 at CCC; 21 of those are 17-year-olds.

This is a slight increase since the May 5 report, which, according to a recent interview by The Center Square, is typical for this time of year. The Center Square spoke with the Director of Juvenile Services Andrew Randall Jr., previously. Randall said May is the month with the highest admissions for the detention center.

Bryant’s May 5 juvenile report showed 14 in detention, two 17-year-olds, six in the Office of Juvenile Justice, 23 at CCC and 456 probation cases.

While this was a slight rise in probation cases since April, Monday’s work session report shows an increase in detention numbers, probation cases and CCC numbers since last month.

Randall previously told The Center Square, “When we look at this time of year, school is letting out or getting ready to let out, and the summer will begin. That kind of intensifies our efforts. If we track just from the data points, even of last year, our highest month of admissions to the detention center was actually May.”

As kids continue to be out of school for the summer, the parish is putting in place events and partnerships to keep kids and families active in the community throughout the summer.

While numbers are rising as May continues, juvenile detention numbers are still lower than they were at the start of the year. Despite the spike over the past month, there were 24 juveniles in detention as of Feb. 18. And, in January, probation cases totaled over 470.
