The aim is to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, beliefs, and habits. In addition to teaching, training, and storytelling, research constitutes an education method. Learning takes place mostly under the direction of educators. However, learners have the option of educating themselves as well. 

Education Types :

  • Formal.
  • Informal.
  • Non-formal.

Formal Education : 

Formal education involves the acquisition of basic education, academic, or trade skills within the school’s premises. Teachers and students both participate in the process of education, as formal education is provided by specially trained teachers. Scheduled fees are paid regularly, and there is a grading system in place. 

Procedures followed in Formal Education :

  • Infants and toddlers will attend nurseries and kindergartens.
  • Formal education usually begins when students are in elementary school. 
  • Follows secondary school.
  • A college or university that grants a degree is usually a post-secondary education or higher education institution.

Examples of Formal Education:

  • Classroom learning.
  • There are different subject areas that have specific courses which must be completed by attending institutions within specified time frames.
  • Training via the Internet.
  • Courses offered through e-learning.

Advantages of Formal Education :

  • Professional and trained teachers provide students with knowledge.
  • The institutions are physically and mentally organized.
  • Obtains a formal certificate of completion.
  • Jobs are readily available.
  • Besides helping to build networks this course helps to develop intellectual skills and alternative skills.

Demerits of Formal Education :

  • A stressful exam or bad grade can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress.
  • Time and money may also be wasted in an unprofessional and nonstandard education system.
  • In modern times, it is costly and rigid.
  • In spite of motivation by professional trainers, some students may fail to learn effectively.

Informal Education :

In contrast to formal education, informal education is not provided by a school or college. Those who aren’t in school and don’t use any specific teaching methods are considered to be informal educators. This kind of education can be gained by reading books or educational websites.

Examples of Informal Education:

  • Children are taught cooking, painting, riding, and other extracurricular activities that relate to family life and a sense of community by their parents.
  • Someone who is learning their native language.
  • It can include self-study, reading articles, watching videos, and receiving coaching.   
  • Events such as seminars and guest speakers.  
  • Providing their own assistance and reaffirming their own self-confidence in their ability to learn quickly and efficiently. 

 Merits of Informal Education :

  • Learning is a natural process throughout your life because it can be done anywhere and anytime with your daily experiences.
  • Education comes from our daily experience and learning new things, so there are no fees required.
  • It is independent of boundary walls where we can utilize a variety of techniques with no specific time span.
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree is not required to take this course, and there is no stress regarding learning new things.
  • Timetables and pre-planned activities are not part of it.

Demerits of Informal Education :

  • Learning disabilities. Insufficient self-confidence.
  • Utilizing the technique may not be appropriate.
  • A lack of a schedule.
  • Disinformation may arise from information obtained from friends and family.
  • Inconsistency in manners, conduct, morals, and ethics.

Non-formal Education : 

A non-formal education program is separate from the school system and takes place without the participation of students. As an alternative or additional way to formal education, it refers to acquired knowledge. A structured learning situation that has no exam or syllabus attached to it is included in this type of learning. Throughout a person’s life, they are consciously and deliberately imbued with this knowledge. Education that is not formal has no age limit, and it involves the development of professional skills. 

Examples of Non-Formal Education:

  • Swimming classes. 
  • Courses leading to certification.  
  • Programs for physical fitness
  • An adult education course based in the community. 
  • Conferencing seminars for professionals.

Merits of Non-Formal Education :

  • Both the public and private sectors are involved in the process of education when the system is open-ended. 
  • Learning professional skills may be involved. 
  • Examinations are not necessary. 
  • The objective is to provide practical and vocational education, not theoretical formal education. 
  • It is possible to adjust the schedule and syllabus.

 Demerits of Non-Formal Education :

  • The teachers are not trained professionals.
  • Through online courses, some colleges and universities offer fake certifications to earn money.
  • Students may obtain the desired type of certification, however their confidence may not be as strong as that of a regularly studied learner. 
  • Evaluation of skill development does not take place. 
  • The curriculum, the ages, and the times are flexible.

Types of lifelong learning that are effective: 

Health education :

  • Health education combines biological, environmental, physical, and mental elements to promote health. In addition, it focuses on emotional, mental, and social health.
  • To maintain a healthy diet.
  • Engage in physical activity such as gym workouts, exercising, walking, and jogging.
  • Maintaining good health is essential.

Environmental education :

  • It involves human management of behavior and ecosystem in order for a sustainable living.
  • These lessons educate children about how various factors affect the environment.
  • There are many factors that can lead to diseases such as cancer, heart disease and asthma. 
  • Pollution and exposure to toxic chemicals can damage hair, resulting in hair loss that requires hair fall treatment. 
  • Environmental problems such as air pollution, global warming, deforestation, plastic pollution, and food waste need to be addressed.

Life skill-based education :

  • Education of this type emphasizes developing life skills.
  • A number of skills are involved, including self-reflection, critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • The goal of life skill-based education is to help individuals meet the demands of everyday life in an effectively positive way.
  • In addition, it helps build confidence in speaking and collaborating with others.
  • With life skill-based education, stress and emotions can be managed. 

Nowadays, education has become one of the most significant topics because most people are involved in it. Government is responsible for the regulations and the education system made in a country. It enables you to become knowledgeable of what is going on around you and to change it for the better. It develops a positive outlook on life. Educating us is all about making us better citizens, getting better jobs, showing us what is right and wrong, so that we can form a better society to live in by respecting the nation, laws, and regulations.
