~ only AC manufacturer in India to use the world’s greenest refrigerant R290, that has Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and lowest Global Warming Potential

14th September 2021: Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group announced that its business Godrej Appliances, one of the leading players in the Home Appliances industry, in line with its brand philosophy of ‘Soch ke Banaya Hai’ or ‘Things Made Thoughtfully’, was the first brand to offer the widest range of India’s most eco-friendly air conditioners with R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant. The air conditioner offers Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and the lowest Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 3. This World Ozone Day, the brand continues its commitment to green, with an exclusive exchange offer under which a consumer can exchange an old air conditioner, which has R22 refrigerant for an exchange value of INR 2000, over and above other ongoing offers by the brand. The offer is valid only on 16th September 2021 at all Godrej Exclusive brand outlets, Green AC Hubs & Preferred Brand Outlets, across the country.

As per the Bureau of Energy Efficiency norms, the key determinants of better-quality green refrigerants are the global warming potential (GWP) and the ozone depletion potential (ODP). With 0 ODP along with negligible GWP score of only 3 for R290, followed by the next best 675 for R32 refrigerant, the entire range Godrej Air conditioners uses only the greenest refrigerants in the market. These ensure Zero ozone layer impact, thereby protecting the Earth and its atmosphere from harmful ultraviolet radiations of the Sun.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently released a report that identified greenhouse gases as one of the key causes of global climate change. According to the analysis, global warming will most likely approach or exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next two decades. It also shows that by protecting the ozone layer by regulating ozone-depleting substances, the Montreal Protocol has helped protect plants and their ability to pull carbon from the atmosphere, as well as curbed climate change to a significant level. Driven by the brand’s long-term commitment towards the Environment, Godrej Appliances became the first and only company in India to manufacture 100% CFC, HCFC and HFC- free refrigerators way back in 2001 (R600A). The brand went on to be the first brand in India to manufacture ACs with green gases which have Zero Ozone Depletion Potential and lowest Global Warming Potential in the industry (R290, year 2012). Extending the commitment beyond products, both of its manufacturing units (Mohali & Shirwal) were among the 1st in India to be Platinum Plus Green Co rated by the prestigious CII.

Santosh Salian, Product Group Head – Air Conditioners, Godrej Appliances, said, “We have always been committed to developing products with lower carbon footprint and our portfolio with R290 refrigerant is an example of that. Even EESL (Energy Efficiency Service Limited) has quoted in its recent report on super-efficient ACs (March 2021) that our SKUs with R290 refrigerant delivers 36.6% higher efficiency with a 6.15 ISEER rating. As we see it, in India the industry will surely adopt more of R290 refrigerants in the future, in their room Air Conditioner portfolio to meet the global emission norms. We are encouraging consumers to replace their air conditioner with R22 refrigerant, with an eco-friendlier and energy efficient variant from the Godrej Air Conditioner range at all our exclusive outlets, while lowering their power bills.”

Godrej & Boyce, apart from engineering environment friendly products, has also been conserving the mangroves ecosystem in Vikhroli, Mumbai over the last few decades. This ecosystem is responsible for sequestering lakhs of carbon, purifying the air and is key in fighting climate change.
