The Science behind Rahu & Ketu

Rahu and Ketu, in other words, are the lunar nodes (points) formed at the two intersections of the Moon’s orbit around the Earth and the Ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun in zodiac).

The ascending node or the node where the moon crosses to the north of the ecliptic is called the North Node, a.k.a. the Dragon’s head or Rahu. The descending node or the node where the moon crosses to the south of the ecliptic is called the South Node, a.k.a. the Dragon’s tail or Ketu.

The lunar nodes play an important role in the formation of eclipses. Eclipses occur when the Sun and the Moon are near the lunar nodes.

Solar eclipse occurs when the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon is almost zero degrees and near one of the nodes (i.e. the Sun, the Moon and the Earth are in the same line as the nodes).
Similarly, Lunar eclipse occurs when the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon is almost one hundred and eighty degrees and near one of the nodes (i.e. the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are in the same line as the nodes).
The Sun mainly denotes the soul, the father and self confidence among many others. Similarly, the Moon mainly denotes the mind, the mother and emotions among many others.
Eclipse means obstruction or obscuring of light. Some consider the event of eclipse to be a negative one, as it darkens the world of light. Some consider it as a new beginning, as the energy is renewed and light follows darkness. It is considered as a life changing event.
The effects of Solar Eclipse can be felt at regions where it can be seen and anywhere from 3 months to 3.5 years from the day of eclipse (sometimes 6 months earlier than the day of eclipse), counting the duration of eclipse in hours and considering the effect to last a year for every hour of eclipse. It brings in considerable changes in lives at physical level, in different fields of life.
The effects of Lunar Eclipse are usually seen on the Mental plane, as Moon denotes the mind. It can be  felt at regions where it can be seen andby counting the duration of the eclipse in hours and considering the effect to last a month for every hour of eclipse. There can be a surge of emotions in people’s mind. Lunatic actions can be observed in abundance during this period. Also, huge variations in tidal frequencies can be felt in the water bodies on earth. Abnormal variations in blood pressure can also be felt during this period, as the moon also represents the body fluids in the living beings.
The North and South nodes of the Moon, i.e. Rahu and Ketu, areKarmic planets. The North node represents the lessons to be learnt from the present birth, where as the South node represents the habit patterns of childhood or past lives. Thus, the time of eclipse is the time to introspect on our life’s purpose and our doings, the right and the wrong.
