Telenor offers unlimited YouTube and Dailymotion streaming for Rs 2 at 150 kbps speed

Given that the vast majority of mobile subscribers in India are still on 2G networks, Telenor India today announced a unique music and video streaming service. Subscribers can stream unlimited videos on YouTube and Dailymotion between 11pm and 7am for as low as Rs 2 a day. The operator is also offering unlimited music streaming from Hungama Music and Eros Now music starting at Rs 41 with a validity of 28 days.

Streaming YouTube and Dailymotion videos on 2G networks might sound impossible given the 2G speeds in our country, Telenor India Chief Product Officer Amaresh Kumar promised speeds of at least 150 kbps.

“At night, voice traffic is low and we will be able to provide speeds between 150 kbps and 200 kbps,” said Kumar. “We are also using various compression and caching technologies to improve the experience. Users can save videos for offline viewing or can even download them at night to view them the next day without any buffering.”

Subscribers can select the video packs starting from Rs 2 to Rs 28 with validity ranging from one day to 28 days. Subscribers can use the new service pack to temporarily cache their favourite online video overnight (11 PM to 7 AM) and enjoy the buffer-free experience during periods of low or no connectivity. To prevent any bill shock if the caching continues after 7 AM, the customers will be charged at 2p/20 KB with a cap of Rs 5 for that day.

“Currently 22% of Telenor’s subscribers use data services on their mobile devices and we expect this to grow to over 50% by 2017,” added Kumar.

Telenor’s pre-paid GSM mobile services are commercially available in the six circles of UP (West), UP (East), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It will soon start commercial operations in Assam.
